Not One Of Us (130bpm)

Peter Gabriel

'Not One of Us' is taken from one of Q Magazine's top 100 Greatest British Albums. Produced by Steve Lillywhite, this album of May 1980 features Jerry Marotta and Phil Collins drumming, the guitar of Robert Fripp, David Rhodes, Paul Weller and XTC's Dave Gregory. The album produced the 1980 hit single "Games Without Frontiers", and the anthemic "Biko".

'Not One Of Us' is made available here as part of Peter's 'Scratch My Back' project of reciprocal covers. On the record of the same name Peter has covered 'The Book of Love' by The Magnetic Fields, in return Stephin Merritt of The Magnetic fields chose to cover 'Not One Of Us'. In the spirit of the project Peter is making his original version available to the wider world here on Real World Remixed.

Like A Hobo (120bpm)

Charlie Winston

"I started playing these chords on my guitar and I knew I had something," recollects Charlie Winston of the week in August 2004 when he composed his song 'Like A Hobo', "Then I took an evening to myself with a bottle of wine to write the chorus. As I played it through I felt strongly this idea of wide open spaces, of a man travelling alone, embracing solitude."

The song was potent, everyone Charlie played it to was touched by its Ennio Morricone-gone-folk buzz and heartfelt zen-outsider lyrics. So much so that he'd run into acquaintances and they'd ask, "How's it going with the hobo life then, Charlie?" He laughs at the memory, "I'd think to myself, 'I'm not really a hobo, I'm still living in an apartment in Stoke Newington doing tiny gigs round London'."

"The song became a mantra for me," he admits, "and that's why I never grow bored of singing it." And he must have sung it thousands of times since those days for slowly but surely it became a European hit, notably in France where it reached the No.1 spot.

Kele Kele (105bpm)

Justin Adams & Juldeh Camara

"I like to keep things raw and swinging so it never gets too pristine or too sweet...I like trancey, circular rhythms and voices that are in between pleasure and pain, where it's bittersweet." Says Justin Adams.

Justin and Juldeh have been playing together for two years "At certain soundchecks I'd start playing something and Juldeh would rush over and say 'keep playing that! We've got to play that tonight' Juldeh would record things on his mobile phone , so that's they way we came up with a lot of material" explains Justin. Over time the two musicians have naturally fused their styles and begun to create a musical language of their own, where it becomes difficult to see if Justin is becoming more African or Juldeh more Western.

The reference points for this release are recordings from the 1950s by the likes of Bo Diddley and Muddy Waters.

Games Without Frontiers (96bpm)

Peter Gabriel

Games Without Frontiers was one of the singles from Peter's third self-titled album. Produced by Steve Lillywhite, this album of May 1980 features Jerry Marotta and Phil Collins drumming, the guitar of Robert Fripp, David Rhodes, Paul Weller and XTC's Dave Gregory, with vocals from Peter and Kate Bush.

Games Without Frontiers was the first time Peter worked with Kate Bush whose backing vocals are in the remix pack.

"The third album was the first time I had a chance to work with Kate Bush who was singing on Games Without Frontiers. I heard Wuthering Heights which I really like. I thought she had an extraordinary wonderful voice and was doing great things as a writer. I went on to work with her again later on 'Don't Give Up'."

'Games Without Frontiers' has recently been remixed with Brand Nubian rapper Lord Jamar to be the theme song for the winter X Games 13 and this summer's X Games 15 in Aspen. The remix pack contains Lord Jamar's rap, drum programming and new backing vocals recorded by Peter.

Dub Colossus

This project brings together an extraordinary but little known African musical heritage, a labour of love recording in a makeshift studio in down-town Addis Ababa and then a journey back to Real World to capture for the first time ever in the UK some of Ethiopia's finest performers.

Ethiopian music is the hidden gem of Africa. At the end of the Sixties and the early Seventies, Ethiopia was in the dying years of the imperial decline of Haile Selassie and the early years of a brutally repressive junta led by Mengistu. Within the confines of this stifling and constrictive environment there flowered some astonishing music.

"A Town Called Addis" was inspired by meeting , writing and working with singers and musicians in Addis Ababa in August 2006, and is a collaboration between Dub Colossus (Nick Page) and these amazing musicians covering Azmari and traditional styles as well as the popular singing styles of the 60s and 70s.

Tiger Phone Card (117.95bpm)

Dengue Fever

Taken from the eagerly-awaited album from the Los Angeles indie-rockers who have made it their mission to revive psychedelic, Khmer rock and roll of the 1960's this track is a spiky feast of jangly guitars, retro keyboards and a pair of fantastic vocals. Fronted by a super-charismatic Cambodian siren, it's a sonic stew of kitsch surf-rock, spaghetti-Western cool, klezmer, ska, Cambodian pop and even Ethiopian jazz.

When the Times newspaper asked "Who will be the music stars of 2008?" one of only a few serious contenders chosen were DENGUE FEVER: "If there is any justice in pop music, we'll all catch Dengue Fever before the year is out."

American press for the album has been outstanding: Los Angeles Times - "Sexy and eclectic, it's world music for the cool kids"; SPIN - "Venus On Earth feels impulsive and rich, rippling with surf psychedelia and exultant brass swing" (4 stars); and PASTE - "The maturing, polyglot sound of America's urban future" (3 Stars).

Exit Through You (109.93bpm)

Big Blue Ball

This track is taken from the long awaited Big Blue Ball, an album recorded over three Real World Recording Weeks, produced by Peter Gabriel and Karl Wallinger and featuring a dizzying array of international musicians. Exit Through You opens with the distinctive vocal of Joseph Arthur with Peter joining at the chorus for a funky spiky pop tune accompanied by Karl and Justin Adams on guitars. The song was originally put together in a fast and furious live session in just over one hour back in 1995; further production work by Stephen Hague followed and a final mix came from Tchad Blake

Kunlarim Sensiz (87bpm)

Sevara

'Sen' sees the irrepressible, ever curious Uzbek world music diva Sevara Nazarkhan leaping boldly into contemporary writing and production. Sen ('you' in Uzbek) - is the album Sevara has always wanted to make: a looping, shimmering, beats-laden gem underscored by traditional instrumentation with Uzbek-language lyrics sent soaring by her unforgettable voice.

Produced by Sevara in collaboration with Russian electro-techno wizard Victor Sologub and the West Country's much-touted Bruno Ellingham - who prepared this sample pack for us - Sen is an outstanding studio production and energized by the spirit of her live performance.

Powered by skippy Timbaland inspired drums and layers of Uzbek percussion, Kunlarim features a mix of the traditional intruments of Uzbekistan, modern electronic production and Sevara's soaring angelic voice.

"Is 'Sen' traditional or contemporary?" Sevara Nazarkhan gives a good-natured shrug. "That's for other people to decide. But either way," she says, shaking out her long dark hair and flashing a dazzling smile. "Sen is who I am."

Cold Hailey Rainy Night (132bpm)

The Imagined Village

The Imagined Village is an ambitious reinvention of the English Folk tradition, embracing the modern-day nation in all its cultural diversity. Fiddles and squeezebox breathe easily alongside electronica and ambient effects, ancestral songs are brilliantly updated with the sounds and voices of today. The idea was to be neither ?authentic? or create a modern musical fusion, but rather make an open, questioning record that takes some of the most beautiful and haunting songs from the English Folk Song Book and see how they interact and collide with contemporary musical idioms and today?s multi cultural society.

The stellar line-up on the forthcoming album, spearheaded by Simon Emmerson, includes The Copper Family, Sheila Chandra, Benjamin Zephaniah, Martin Carthy, Eliza Carthy, Paul Weller, Transglobal Underground, Tunng, Chris Wood, Billy Bragg, Tiger Moth, Gloworms, Dhol Foundation.

"We are looking for the most Imaginative and inventive re-mix of one of England's oldest stories of love, sex and betrayal: Cold Hailey Rainy Night. This song has been passed down from generation to generation through the oral tradition of folk music. We are now passing it on to you to be re-invented by the Real World Remix community.

This traditional tune was  taken by Transglobal Underground from a very early album by England's premier folk guitarist and singer Martin Carthy. He once said the only harm you can do to a traditional song is not perform it. We say the only harm you can do to a modern interpretation of a traditional song is not re-mix it. With his permission they sampled up his guitar and re-arranged the track adding a bangra/indian trip hop shuffle, sitar and the massed chorus of the young Copper Family, the oldest living family of Englands traditional singers. The song is performed by two of England's greatest traditional singers: Martin's daughter Eliza Carthy and Chris Wood. We are looking for in whatever way people want to go. What we want is the most imaginative interpretation of the story you can think off, a re-interpretation of the track. Think filmic and outside of the box. Traditonal music? Pass it on and re-invent it."

The Imagined Village Limited Edition EP will be released July 2007. The Imagined Village album will be released 10 September 2007. UK Tour - November 2007.

Salala (102.7599bpm)

Angelique Kidjo feat. Peter Gabriel

The key was to build DJIN DJIN on a Beninese foundation. The heartbeat, then, comes from percussionists Crespin Kpitiki and Benoit Avihoue, both members of Benin's Gangb'e Brass Band. Details of their country's rhythmic heritage, specific in some cases to individual villages, feed the rhythms they lay down throughout the album.

The contributions of stellar guest artists illuminate Kidjo's concept. By finding a place for their distinctive talents within the marriage of African and Western influences, DJIN DJIN celebrates the beauty of diversity as well as the unity of cultures that Kidjo achieves through her music.

What You Are (110bpm)

Joi

'What You Are' is a song about love and friendship - the moment when you reach mutual trust and can truly believe in someone. Joi are Bengali but the Arabic influence here is strong and the 'oud played by Yazid was the initial inspiration for the track. The 'oud is the pear shaped, fretless plucked instrument originally from Mesopotamia which relates to the Western lute or Bengali dutara. For Farook this instrument has crossed boundaries and has united cultures , and unity with the embattled Middle Eastern nations is a theme of the song. The Bengali lyrics sung by Apeksha Dandekar are all about reciprocal understanding : " I know what you're saying!"

Joi wanted the music to be positive and uplifting - an 80's 'Chaka Khan' groove driving the track along in a buoyant, optimistic way with big waves of harmonising strings !

The original track was programmed using Propellerheads Reason software and then added to and mixed in Protools. All the bass sounds are from either Trilogy by Spectrasonics or Indigo by Access.

If I Had My Way (114bpm)

Little Axe

Who has released records on all these labels: the legendary r'n'b label OKeh, the nu-blues stronghold Fat Possum, the key rap originators Sugar Hill, Tommy Boy and 4th & Broadway, Real World Records and the innovative On-U Sound?

Which musician links Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaata, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, James Brown, Robert Plant, Mark Stewart & The Mafia, Sinead O'Connor, and Megadeth?

The answer to both questions is Skip McDonald, and Skip is LITTLE AXE.

Skip made his name as an integral part of the Sugar Hill house band playing on influential early rap classics 'Rapper's Delight', 'The Message' and 'White Lines' and part of Adrian Sherwood's On-U Sound crew he has made some of the most adventurous and praised UK music of the last 20 years.

'If I Had My Way' is the opening track to Little Axe's second album on Real World, 'Stone Cold Ohio'. A love letter to his birthplace, this album "surf's time" fusing the gospel, blues and soul of his youth to the modern principles of Hip Hop and Dub.

Be sure to click on the album cover to take a look at the Little Axe micro-site at Realworldrecords.com where you can sample the rest of the album, read more about this fascinating artist and watch the Stone Cold Ohio EPK which includes footage of their live set at the Real World Summer Party.

Shock The Monkey (148.6bpm)

Peter Gabriel

Peter Gabriel's Shock the Monkey is probably one of the most recognized tracks from his fourth solo album recorded between spring 1981 and summer 1982. This was one of the first tracks to use sampling technology utilizing the ground breaking Fairlight CMI and and other classic machines such as the Linn Drum and the Prophet 5 synth. You can hear these sounds throughout the sample pack.

"...people saw that as a sort of animal rights song, but it wasn't actually it was a song about jealousy."

'This was going to be 21st Century Qawwali-organic meets technological, moving all our traditions forward. The essence of a collaboration is people - what drives them, their dreams, aspirations, their daily rhythms.  We're not so dissimilar'
