Remixer Notes
A couple of weeks ago I shipped this monkey off under strong lock and key and waved him goodbye from the studio window. It was time to spend time with new friends, but then just the other night I heard a noise inside. It was he. Seems his careless new owner had left the cage door open, he escaped, and had spent all that time trying to find his way back, trying to return to me. This is his story
Ah well as Hughie says. That?s the Power of Love
`Glory is like a circle in the water,
Which never ceaseth to enlarge itself,
Till by broad spreading it disperse to nought.?

Sweet movie-like atmosphere. Not the first ballad attempt though, but the umpteenth. But one of the better - very classy and skillful. I'll add this as a favourite and give you a FIVE! People are too tight on those fives. ;)
As always, LoveShadow delivers a stellar mix! Great job mate!
this sounds really nice man:)
sweet pads and clean. vocal is way too dry at the very beginning imo. id like some more reverb. main vocal sounds perfect though good amount of reverb but maybe dampen it a tiny amount.
good job overall bossman.
Very nice - moody and filmatic, indeed. Great harmonies . love the sad chords and the sweet bass together with the bell-like sounds (guitar harmonics? Makes me think of Mike Oldfield . which is generally good). A good ballad version indeed.
I don't know why, but I get goose bumps listening to this.
I love the arrangement and that lead sound is the perfect.
I think the vocals are a bit out front. If they were down just a bit it would be perfect.
pogr4m thats a wonderfull thing to say. I cannot help but have the vox up front PGs voice is so emotional and becomes more obvious for me in this setting. I posted in the forum that these are demos so its just a balance issue but im stoked you liked it.
Originally I didn't think too much of the 4 bar progression you used here. a little cliche for my tastes. but the way you used PG's voice, particularly in that first chorus was brilliant. Nothing flash or anything. just something about how all those 'shock the monkeys' lined up that really made the progression and everything about that chorus work for me. Just a touch of magic there or something I guess.
Very impressive. Again. Allthough somewhat too 'polished' for my taste it has a natural. vanzelfsprekendheid. which is dutch for 'goes without saying' or something. It's like you shake your arm a bit and there's another mix coming. Is him still around?
Another Mix??? The vocals sound very clear. Your not PG are you ???
Very understated effective but similar to some other mixes on here not your your best i.m.h.o. but another good one
Great Mix. Really got the PG feel in it. He could have done this one himself. Superb
Great Production. Reminds me a lot of Mandalay.
As many comments L gives, as many mixes he's making.
Another perfect mix. I've really no comment.
A double compliment here as it Mr David K Roberts whats happenin, Epilougue 1997 is long time ago. And then to be compared to Mandalay is another top honour. For anyone who has not heard Nicola Hitchcock check her out and you,ll might see why some of Maddonas new stuff sounds the way it does.
Off topic: here's the first rounded circle for me: Nicola sang on Hector Zazou's cd 'Strong currents'.
Beautiful!
I've listened to this about twenty times now, and I like it more and more. It's as if Craig Armstrong spent a rainy day in the Real World studios going through PG's old tapes. What I particularly like about this version is the way it brings out the expressiveness of Peter's vocal, especially on the second verse: there's a wonderful, anguished dying fall the end of some of his lines, which I never noticed on the original track. It's a song about jealousy, and this treatment really brings out the theme: putting the vocal in a more languid setting gives a real sense of rage-filled melancholy, which is exactly how jealousy can be. Marvellous work.
Steve 451 You speak my mind entirely . Gabriels voice has always for me had the effortless quality of injecting an emotional twist into every word at whatever tempo. As someone who has listend to these words thousands of times and worked them back and forth in mixes then to get that in few listenings shows you have a good ear. What no one has spotted in any of my mixes, but you got close to, is there is only one `cover me' i have ever used and never the first one and the chorus is made up of words from all of the choruses plus a few other editing tricks along the way. Thanks for your words.
Let me be clear. I do not like this ambient stuff, usually I find it too pretentious. But there's love for the material here, much more than in Mr Loveshadows previous attempt(s). So I'm still giving it 4/5 for sheer quality, although I'm not saving this one as a favourite.
Ive been monitoring LS's work, and with some carefull trouble shouting with my midi probs, im hoping to perhaps figure out how i can also tribute something to this site as good as this! (breath)
Me tinks ill stay away from THE MONKEY and try one of the other sample packs though.
However im totally new to music creation and it may take so long for me to create that ill probably miss the boat with regards to this compo!
Still ill post asap. (here goes)
Ice !
Beautiful!!
Really wonderful! The best remix I heard by far!!!
It's stellar work. But the refrain doesn't really sit. Or fit.
After listening to your remix a few times, I am beginning to feel that I prefer your rendition over the original. With all due respect to PG of course.
Nice work.
Osteele, it is the body of work that Peter Gabriel has done over years with slow emotive and atmospheric pieces that is my inspiration for this rework. I am under his influence whilst making this so to compare or prefer it to the original is not without respect as for me, they come from the same source.
Truly glad you liked
Very beutiful! Can only agree with the comments above.
We have a winner !!!
wow the great Loveshadow listened to my song. Much heard about you in the forums. I really wanted to make a bigger arrangement but because of my mellotron samples i always trespassed the 4 mb restriktion for upload, so i had to shorten a lot. Make another greater arrangement for myself.
So i have to look for your work and naturely it s a fantastic soundscape, sound like a big fat studio you work in, very professional. Like other here this songs reminds me to Mike Oldfield and i love his music. So far this piece will stuck here in the top twenty
This is the first mix I have heard now, which completely covers the spirit and atmosphere of
the song and PGs voice!
The song is not just a cover but a new arrangement.
Actually I never liked the song STM very much!
But THIS one is superb!
***** stars for this one!
yours LIA
I can't stop playing this track! I've been listening to these STM remixes all week, and while there is a lot of nice work being done by others, Loveshadow's is the only one that really stands up as a song in its own right. It's spine-tinglingly good. I played it for some friends last night (both PG fans) and they were absolutely floored by it. This would chart worldwide tomorrow, no doubt. And PG is nuts if he doesn't make this the B-side to his next single.
Nice mood. sounds like a movies titlesong. good job!
Damn! The best harmonies to his melody yet. S-p-o-t on dude. I would add a couple of live acoustic guitars halfway through to lift the beat even more and raise the goosebumpfactor a nod
Great mix Loveshadow. I gave it a five star rating because it gets the mood right, sad and reflective. There's a lot of longing and pain there, something that's been missing from the dance mixes. I guess you can dance your pain away too. The harmony and those little twittery bits really give the piece atmosphere. My only complaint is that its still a bit too sweet and pretty for a "love song concerned with jealousy," two emotions that have the capacity to make people nearly psychotic if left alone with their own thoughts for too long. Thanks, it's wonderful.
That comment was hardly worth waiting for, was it? I forgot a few things. Yes, I think you have kept this one beautifully within the pg catalogue. I know that's not everyone's intention or preference, and it need not be, but that's what I am looking for. In fact, this mix would line up nicely with some of the tracks on "Long Walk Home," which has a somewhat broody, but also sweet and poignant feel. That brings you right to the end of the timeline. Thanks for bringing stm up to date.
The public are enjoying the ride LS
Nice use of the atmospheric ambience patch as the intro. displaying the clock ticking/ Musical jewelry box!! you open it up to show what gems you possess!!!.and the vocals are there to add the sizzle!
Would have been great layered onto a Miami Vice episode!
one word EMOTIVE !
5Stars (((and i dont mean the Jacksons)))
Very moody
My favourite of all my favourites - a great piece of work.
what's not to like about it?
5 stars
Great how you have made the vocal so sincere!!! great.
Like what you did to the voice
I love it.
The FX-Programming is great, smooth harmonies! I like it very much - amazing vibe of the whole track!!
Excellent remix absolutely loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!
Brilliant
touching, sensible, well balanced remix!
good dramaturgy. the vocals are breathing. i like it very much. only thing, the reverb on the main vox could be more natural, or more decent, for my taste.
that's the mix! pretty emotional! great!
The beginning really excited me, but to be honest it got a little drab towards the end, and I was left wanting. Great idea though.
i ve overseen this beauty, manages the balance between kitsch and real beauty. warm and hearty.
ottimo!!!!!!!!!!!! bravo!!!!!!!!!
this is superb work. aside from the technical job you did with bravour, you managed to deliver an emotional content in this great great verses that I´ve never noticed before that clearly. shame on me.
outstanding! congratulations.
What really sticks out for me is the way you've made the second half of the verses work in an entirely different way from the original, and combine this with the Smooth As Silk production and I say, its great!
I continue to be genuinely amazed at the comments this mix recieves and can only humbly give thanks to those that have left them and to PG for sharing the magic, who by doing so has sprinkled a little of the dust my way. Loveshadow
The only problem with this mix is that it seems like a complete waste of time for me to even bother. I was originally thinking of a Charlatans-UK vs PM thing.
You somehow have managed to make one of 'our' lesser fav PM songs and turned it into something TRULY special.
I do agree with one writer that the vocs are maybe a little loud (only becuz the music is beyond perfect).
Tori Amos is my all time favorite. I bet this mix style with her music would something special. From what I know she seems to enjoy having her music re-mixed.
One of the best here
superbe
Great remix. Never thought of the track performed in this way. The only thing that bothers me is that it's just a little bit too simple. Thats a bit of the charm of the track, but some glitchy effects and such would make it awsome.
At least I gave it a 4/5.
This is #1!!! Amazingly soothing for a "Shock Session"!
Can I be the millionth person to say: This mix is amazing! wow wow, great job man!
Great, really great!! Hope that Peter picks up a few remixes for a special "Best-of-shock-the-monkey-remix-competition"-Album. This one will be one of the songs on it!!
I hope I gave it 5 but I might have pressed the wrong button
lovely
really nice loveshadow. i could say more but woud just be repeating what others have said already. great stuff mate.
Loveshadow, I was listening to all of your mixes and the only thing I can say: great work, man! The style of production is professional and CD-ready, the ideas are great - seems to me you did that before? Hope to hear more of your stuff, maybe not only from Realworld Remixes?? Is there anything else out there from you? Regards from Austria!
I've listened to many mixes on here, as I didn't want to be influenced or put off doing my own thing. But this is the first one I've given 5 to. Superb.
Whoops, last comment meant to say 'I've NOT listened.' hope that makes more sense!
I cant stop listening to this one
Once again i moved to thank the last 11 people for commenting on Darwins Lament its a great motivation for me . and especially LOAF who joins Steve451 in becoming mildly addicted
Thers nothing mild about it. I need help.
Loveshadow this mix is awsome I gave it 5 stars!!!!
. . . love this one. . . a classic!
after three or four beers I might go home with this one. This monkey Is very sad and needs some nuts.
Cant stop giglling over you comment Altersix nice one. thanks also to Pooh and the Monks, isnt that a great name for a band. ???
Comment from Japan Tokyo !
Beautifull strings and sine-synth.
Beautifull re-harmonization.
So beautifull.
great!!!
like a new p.g. to me!(i hope he wont be angry to me)
you create a new song, this is more than a mix to me.
so acoustic and pure.
best from hungary.
sGz
man! This is G-000000000-D!
Slamming down mixes and paused to listen to this one again.Tears. Beautiful. Can't add to previous comments. Just downloaded ASS sample pack. Considering another. Thanks. ESS
I like more this. Very emotive, intense strings.
Do you play keyboard?
I hope for your comments about my mixes. I know that I do more serious mixes, but I wanted my own way too.
Ok, good luck again
I agree with one comment, that it is mooore than a mix, cause your result is like Peter Gabriel came up to listen to your music and after a while, being speachless,he just put his lyrics into your beautiful music!
Very nice work you have done here.
Guess one of yours has to go in, and this one might be it or was it.?
Loved most of your interpretations. look forward to seeing your work in the final 10
Simg
Nice and spacious, One of my favorite at this time.
Nice ambience. Keep playing it over and over.
Just another note of thanks from me for your kind comments and as noted from all around the world.I do appreciate it and they were my reason for starting the `International Thanks' thread in the forum
Wow. Just wow.
This version evokes an entirely new side of the song previously unheard of. My guess is, if PG listens to this, he'll be just as taken aback as the rest of us. A brilliant new concept.
Five stars from Norway!
I feel the first part of the remix somehow captures the *Gabriel* spirit. Some of the other remixes have seemed a little slow. This one felt a little more "relaxed" than slow.
Liked it alot.
now this is dope.very good. I could've really added some sound design to this to take it over but great.
Before go to sleep for nice dream.
Great overall sound and instrumentation! Reminiscent to me of Bjork's "Venus as a Boy", which isn't a track I'd normally associate with the PG style. but you pull it off and make this track your own. Beautiful!
Its all been said but to pracie.goose bumps.beautiful.cinematic.Craig Armstrong.
The most original take so far, well thought out with intelligent use of pauses giving the more powerful elements more effect. My most listened to track, so far. Outstanding, now theres a word thats not been used, yet!
PS The keyboard intro and outros are a really nice, with the effected vocal it really sets the mood. 'You look stunning, may I have this dance'.
Loveshadow, why can't you offer me the helpful technical advice you offer the others? Is it that you don't take me seriously? What's your game, eh? I know that you could teach me so much about music, not just about mixing. Think about how it looks from my end.
subtle,touching.bravo!
from Poland 5 stars
The sound kind of crawls all over you
It tends to know where to sit
Sometimes the mixes weave together
It just depends how they fit
I think they fit very well here.Bravo to the Shadow.
Just brilliant!!!
For shure one of my favorites
you're one talented guy - like it a lot
Fantastic, like all of your other mixes. What equipment are you using (if I can ask)?
@bdhirsch.
Edirol 2496. Logic 5.5 on P.C, 1 gig ram. All keyboards are Albino 2, tweaked from the available presets. The strings are Edirol Orchestra, beats & FX are my own samples played in EX24. All reverbs, compression ect are from Logics core set. 2 channel wav directly exported with no other external mastering.
Only secret ingredient is the vocal treatment.
Thanks for your comment and hope that helps
This is your best remix. Very sensitive, the contrast between PG's vocal energy and the smooth music give this piece a really dramatic touch.
MILDLY addicted?! I'm still playing this one daily after more than a month! Love your ORIGIN OF THE SPECIES version, too.
really nice slow down version.
Best "Ballad Version" of Schock The Monkey, well done!
just great stuff !!!
on my favs too !!
A calming remix compared to the original. This contrast is very interesting. The flowing countermelody throughout the entire remix gives it continuity. Excellent use of dynamics.
from all your mixes, this is my favourite-so far.
Great mix! >Hervorragend!
this is surely the very very best of all.you must win!!!!
Good luck!!!
great.gänsehaut-feeling without end!!!!!!!!!!!!!
super
I think you meant to write "Huey" up top, but that's really the only mistake I can find here. It would be nice to hear a full orchestra instead of the keyboards, but it's awesome.
without words!
the best slow version in this contest!
Verry original,superb **** stars
very interesting.Listen to the absolute other end of the spectrum with live drums here!
http://www.realworldremixed.com/remixer.php?remixer_id=63qo0tpUWiIm8CVcfwY.
there's nothing more to add!!!
Very nice pop Song.with a classical touch.
You're a great musician!
Best wishes to win
from old Germany
Positive and hopefull (no Bin Laden, no Bush, no bombs only L O V E)
aces. love the noisy flourishes.
Amazing Stuff, soo honest and pure . yet very sad!
This has got to be the winner!
You've really matched the wistfulness in PGs vocals.
Hmmm. you really captured the feelings in the vocals and wrapped them nicely !!!
This is probably the best example of "not too many and just the right amount of effects is the best" !
You are my fav no. 1 dude!
What a great version, i just love it !
Hi Loveshadow,
you are a great Musician,respect.
greetings from Josh
Hi Mr. Loveshadow,
you done interesting mixes
this one is the best i think
so got a onestar-voting - the best
Greetings from
Germany
L-Air
one of the best remix !
Very nice atmosphere.
The sidestick sample starts to distract me as it sounds like it should have been a softer strike with a little more reverb to set it back a bit.
Nice vocals.
Excellent work.
Very cool! Feels vibrant, melancholy, haunting; i like the flute especially; good change at the end, kept it interesting.
nice ambiance, sweet harmonies and on the spot rythm. Great work!
Good production, but a blatant rip off of marshpeoples "breathe" mix.
This mix is worth to get gold.
This is the first one I want to have a copy of. Very nice.
Yes, Loveshadow. That definetely catches the other emotion that is connected to jealousy - loosing a beloved.
Great song, great sound (even though you´re using a filtered square-lead sound (or are my ears too tired by now ??) and a great production.
It goes straight to my top ten
I really like this mix it is really good
Mission fulfilled:
I have rated every competition-monkey on this site and commented on many of them. And I finished my Top-10.
Your mix is my personal No. 1. Peter will listen to it soon, and I hope the rest of the world will soon do so, too. This song boosted me away from the very first moment ("ground beneath me shake"). The person behind this song did as well. As I said before: you are a part of the spirit of this site, your music and your comments let it glitter!
I hope Peter takes some pictures while he gives the Duende to you.
This would help running over you in a mall wherever in the world.
Nice and a little emotional.
Another great hit by Loveshodow
on the top 10!!
This Mr. Loveshadow cracks me up
Someone mentioned - is he PG?? Could be!
What a beautiful mood, this track is hot!!
5 Stars and top ten!!
Btw.this is one of my favourite of all
Hey Loveshadow.is there any possibility to get your great fantastic version of shock the monkey "darwins lament", even if you shouldn't win this competition.and this case would be very very regrettable for all human beeings and especially for Peter!!!
Bless you,
Julia
A really big thank you to everyone who placed any of my mixes into their top ten and left supportive comments over the months. To even come any where near the result i got, is surprising considering the high quality of the mix material on this site.
Thanks Again
Hi,
I just want to add to Julia's comment above. Your version - Darwin's Lament" is just fantastic. If you ever post it somewhere, please let us know - would love to have it!! Thanks for all the effort you put into this and the other remixes, especially "ballad of enos". kudos to you!
Mike
I've listened to this again after and enjoy it as I do almost all of your other mixes. Then the ground bass (repeating bassline that never changes) popped out at me and got me curious about the title - - "Darwin's Lament" - - "Dido's Lament"?? If on purpose, clever. If accidental, still a clever remix. :)
I keep coming back to listen to this. There is unfathomable pathos in the words of this song. From the first â??Cover me,â? it resonates in an almost painful way. The original had it, but almost totally obscured by a sort of defiance. Love the way you exposed the raw side. There were some great remixes in the competition, but no one elseâ??s hit me in the gut like yours did. Thank youâ?¦.
I still love this song!!
I just thought I'd say that Im still listening to this.
Not constantly. that would be silly. but at the moment I am :0)
Its lovely, even after all this time.
I just thought I'd say that 'Loaf' is not the only one.
Brilliant work, your remix-version really is hot and it "shock the moneky and homo sapiens"
Well laid out, nice arrangement, enjoyed it.
