DJ Rkod's Favourite List

DJ Rkod Comments on Other's Remixes

Wow! I have to say, of all the remixes on this site, this is one of the very worst. And I *LIKE* disjointed, Avant-garde music and such. I like some of the harmonies but just going on the music, it is. well, bad. Your use of instruments is un-rhythmic, especially the drums and bass, and, well, the guitars, and the vocals. basically everything you use sounds like it was randomly triggered aside from a few bits at the end. Some might call this clever but I tend to think of it as ridiculously pretentious. If you have any talent at all, it is not represented here.

As some have expressed, it is never boring, but it also goes nowhere and is more or less what someone could get by setting up random triggers on the sample pack. No new instruments, no new themes; no subtlety, no tact in terms of melody, no dynamics, no hooks, nothing. To be honest it's difficult to even class this as music; to me there is no art involved.

All of this is without taking into account your ridiculous army of trolls. That's all I'm gonna say about them, as obviously they have retaliated on some of the more vocal critics. I will say, I am going to be having a nice chat with the Real World team about this.

Sorry Doghouse, but I've already uploaded the fixed version. Hopefully it'll be approved soon and you guys can listen to my song as it was meant to be. ;-)

Though I must admit, the chipmunks are entertaining.

Crap! Thanks for pointing that out colab, I actually DID make a mistake uploading this!

I'll try to get the file replaced immediately.

It's OK. Not very inventive. And not exactly a remix, as you said.

Just OK.

3/5

-Rkod

Terrific! Great progressive sound. Not something that can be easily pigeonholed into a specific genre, but I like this a great deal. Good rythyms, outstanding vocal treatement.

5/5

-Rkod (Formerly KroD)

Too short! I want moooooore! This is great stuff. I myself have tried some Reich-a-likes (listening to two and a half hours of sixteen Little Axes, ah the memories) but have come nowhere near this kind of musical collage. I didn't quite get a rain feeling off this, but I can see why some people would hear that.

The strings are quite nice. The vox aren't so great, but hey, they weren't that good to begin with. :-0

5/5

-Rkod (Formerly KroD)

Horrific! Very pure industrial. An explosion of ugly noise.

Love your distortion, which means that I loved the mix. I identified a few sounds (drums, ouds) as being from the pack as well as the vox from the outro. Beyond that, I'm hopelessly lost.

Wonderful! 5/5

-KroD

Hrm.

Very interesting groove you have going here! Strange textural vocals, good drums, good use of the sample pack.

Creative - perhaps a little too progressive for boring old me. And the ending is too sudden But still quite interesting. 4/5 I say. :-)

-KroD

Had me from the title.

Just AWESOME! House meets gritty urban Arab-type funky music!

Love it! :-)

5/5

-KroD

Nice electro rock remix. Great bassline!

The whole thing seems a bit lacking in energy, though. Your choruses needed some more stuff going on in the higher frequencies. Maybe a little acid 303-like distortion on the bass would have worked?

Like the vocal treatment. Well, I like it more than the original. You did a good job from (in my opinion) bad material.

Just lacks some OOMPH here and there. Otherwise good. :-)

4/5

-KroD

To make a pad pun: Hell Yeah! :-)

Personally I wasn't too fond of the vocals, so it's just as well your mix didn't use much of them. This is good, though. Reminds me of something the Chemical Brothers might do to this. :-)

Short but sweet!

4/5

-KroD

Agree with The_Joe and Backstage Superstarz on this. You almost got me at about 3:00 when you stopped the beat, but you didn't fully explore the possibilities of your choral arrangement and you missed out on something that could have been really moving.

Well, it's just OK. Nothing too special here.

Ho-hum, 3/5

-KroD

Whoah. I'm tripping out. What in the world is going on here?! You pretty obviously have a VERY firm grasp on your editing software. You've got a lot of spangle in this mix.

I think you should have put in a syncopated beat to maybe pin this down a bit. (In case you don't know: a syncopated beat emphasises beats 5 and 13, usually with a snare drum.)

I'm STILL tripping out though. Wow, this mix is far out there. I have to agree with L-D on all points, but I still really like this mix.

4/5 (Excellent for a first time attempt.)

-KroD

Er, that's BITS of it, not buts. Curse my clumsy fingers!

Erm, eh.

THAT was different.

Very

disconnected.

Like

This mix needs to be more cohesive. It needs a bassline or drumbeat to hold it together. Right now buts of it are flying off and landing in my soup! Yuck!

Not to say that some of these little vignettes don't work; in fact, many are very nice, (1:55 to 2:08 springs to mind) but they are like snowflakes. Beautiful, each one melts in a few seconds.

In short, tis remix has too many ideas for its own good. It is divided up into infinitesimal tidbits which, while pleasant, do not last long enough and are not held together very well.

3/5

-KroD

Whoah, trippy orchestral neo-classical space goth, dude! Very good. Just too bad about that wretched 80kbps compression. X-{

5/5

-KroD

Slick! A nice fast groove you've got going here. Well produced, with a nice thick, busy sound. I wouldn't have thought this song would do well in DnB, but you've done it!

Good job!

4/5

-KroD

I prefer your other mix. Frankly this is just the same thing except with you singing.

And you can't sing. X-{

2/5 For the good production. I find your singing irritating.

-KroD

Hehe, dancy.

The vocal timing seemed a bit off, but the drums and basslie were very up-front and direct. I like that. Nice sounding synths in this trancy mix.

At less than four minutes, this feels very cut-down, probably to comply with the small file limit here. I'd have liked to hear a longer version of this.

4/5 :-)

-KroD

Little Axe singing in a nightclub with a jazz band while the listener stands outside in the rain.

Not a whole lot of original sounds here. Mostly from the sample pack. And your drums seem weak and weedy. The vocal timing could also have been tweaked. And the mix doesn't really fill its four minutes well. It's too repetitive.

Nice thunder sounds though. :-)

3/5

-KroD

Little Axe jamming in the garage with his guitar, his drummer, his bassist and. his choir? A nice acoustic bluesy feeling here. Enough rock influences to be interesting as well.

Some of the drums sound a bit cheap. There's a high-hat that sounds a lot like something you'd find in an 808 or 909, and it doesn't fit.

However this is still a fine mix.

4/5

-KroD

Beautiful melodies. An ethereal, amdient soundscape held down by solid drums and a nice synth pattern.

Lots of sounds; interesting enough to fill its five minutes without any boredom setting in. That's good.

The vocal timing seemed a bit off at times, and the outro is a bit long, but otherwise this electro-ambient piece is very nice. :-)

4/5

-KroD

A twisted lullaby. Reminds me of something American McGee might do if he made music.

The vocals are a bit heavy when only the music box is playing. I think a little reverb would have made them sit better.

The lowpass drums are nice. The give a very distinct "soldiers marching outside" feel to this.

I've been complaing lately that the mixes I review are too long. At under three minutes, this is too short. It doesn't have enough time to fully explore this haunting fairytale.

That's what keeps it from being a five-star mix.

4/5

-KroD

Slow, mellow.

Somewhat boring.

Not a lot going on here. Nice textural synth pads, some good beats and a nice lead.

But still, it's too long and there aren't a lot of ideas at work.

The Jacuzzi, while soothing and pretty, has almost put me to sleep.

3/5

An interesting effort, but eventually weak and sounding out of tempo and out of key.

There's a difference between minimalism and under production. The synthy strings have a nice airy feel but would be complemented well by a more full, rich sound. The flute is nice, though.

And you definitely need a better drum beat. The Linn loop gets very old, very quickly.

I'd recommend a good soft synth. You need a way to get sounds of your own into a mix.

The outro is too long and should have ended with the double tom hit rather than going on for a couple of beats.

In summation, you need more instruments. The sound here is very light and sparse, which works sometimes, just not here. More variety would have been nice also; even the sample packs have some nice beats if you can't create your own.

I hate to do this to you but I have to rate this a 2/5. I hope that I've provided enough advice to help you in the future.

-KroD

Interesting and visionary work. I picture a turntable spinning on in a war-ravaged city, fires and ruins around. Around it we see soldiers marching. The tension is kept low, but ever-present. All over the place, troops march through the rubble. As the song moves on, the "camera" zooms out and we just see more and more of this massive city and more soldiers. Everything has been completely destroyed. Then, towards the end, we start to zoom in on one particular grunt; just as the song finishes, we see a flash of something behind him - then he cocks his gun. :-)

I like that imagery, though the mix has some problems:

It's probably too monotonous.

Organ and bass don't quite fit.

And, most importantly, it seems like the best story to tell would start *after* the gun noise. (More aggressive and faster-paced style music).

4/5

KroD

Nice to see that my one-man fan club is still hanging around. :-) Oh yes, I forgot to give everybody the vocals!

Haaaaaaa

Haaaaaaa

Ee Ee Ee-ee Ee

Haaaaaaa

Er - you get the point!

Anyway, I like this site, so I'm not planning on going away anytime soon. :-) I'm working on a remix at this very moment, actually.

Interesting, but a bit lacking in energy. As pacrat says, I nice ethnic feel, but just a bit slow. ;-)

Still, good atmosphere. 4/5

Nice atmosphere! This one has a very dubby feel to it. :-) The vocals seem a bit distorted, even when you aren't warping them, but that's only a minor problem.

Nice beat, and good rearragnement of the vocals, too. :-)

4/5

Strange. This is a very unstructured mix, and while the overall genre could be classified as industrial, I can hear elements of freeform jass as well.

I would have preffered more lyrics from the original, as this can sound like more of a sound collage at times rather than an actual song.

3/5

House! Mmmm, I like this one. The echo on the BeepAndPerc was nice to hear, and you've got a very hard-hitting bass drum in the mix as well. Good job!

4/5

Funny, fresh and vibrant! A welcome change from, er, non-tango mixes. :-) Strange, yet still very skillfully handled.

Well done!

4/5

The timing was very off, but this was still a nice mix. I really liked the wavy feel at the end; that was very peaceful and you don't find a lot of mixes here that manage to do that without being boring. :-)

4/5

Thanks for the kind words everyone. :-) I don't usually post comments on my mixes, but since we have a question:

Eight or nine filters were used, including two comb filters and being vocoded with static. I vocode a lot of things in my mixes, and not always vocals. I find that some very neat sounding instruments can come out of it. Several vocoded instruments are in my first mix "The Monkey, Shock" and more can be found in this mix, including the synth in the bridge, which is being modulated by a repeating bass drum.

Again, thanks for you comments. :-)

It's OK, but this seems more like an original composition that samples STM rather than a remix. I like the synth riff that playa throughout, but overall this lacks energy and feeling. Some vocals might have helped, but as is this seems like ambient music and I don't like ambient music. :-( It's an interesting try, though. Also, it's WAY too quiet. You could have amplified this several decibles without the need for any mastering whatsoever.

3/5

KroD

It's pretty OK. Basically, the different elements of this mix don't work well together. The sampled bassline doesn't sound right with all this orchestral stuff going on, but the drums do work.

What I would have liked here is a chorus. One with more energy, at least. Here, you don't really change what you're doing for the chorus, which is actually pretty jarring. The vocals are also a bit out of tempo.

Nevertheless, I respect an attempt to do something different with STM, even though it didn't turn out perfectly.

3/5

KroD

It's good. It is too close to the original, but that's no big problem and there are enough new elements here to keep things interesting enough. I like that you've brought out the bass more, and the added horns are nice as well. :-) I like this mix. It's a bit quiet, but again, that's a small complaint.

I do have to say that I didn't see a lot of ideas here. That does knock a start off my rating.

So, a respectful 3/5.

Hey, I'm really liking this. :-) I've always been fond of vocoders and theremins, so this was really up my alley. Really great work on the pitch-shifting and beautiful harmonies. This sounds very authentic, even with the mp3 compression. Love it!

5/5

Nicely done. :-) At first, when I heard that organ, I thought to myself "if this is ANOTHER moody, depressing mix, I'm going to shoot somebody!". I was pleasantly surprised when it turned into a funky dub-type track. Good use of warping on the bass, and overall good production. Putting my head between the speakers to get the full panning effect did indeed make me a bit dizzy! :O=

4/5

A bit boring, even at less than three minutes. I would really have enjoyed some new instruments at some point in the mix, perhaps some chimes? I like what's here; it just goes on for too long. And kudos for producing this classical feel. It's OK, overall.

3/5

Pretty well made, but not well mastered. This could have been quite a bit louder.

However, that doesn't stand in the way of this being a nice riffy mix. Maybe it isn't the most creative thing you could have done, but it is very interesting and I like the resequencing of the original instruments. The speed changes on the vocals are also a nice change. It could have had a bit more impact, though.

3/5

Whoah! A very plunderphonic feel here. Also some nice glitch influences. And under all the sliced up vocals and wierd sounds, it's actually very danceable. :-) Good beat, and VERY creative.

4/5

Too close to the original for me. Yes, it's good, but that is because the original song is good. There really isn't a lot of new stuff here. Try adding some fresh instruments, maybe making it a bit shorter, and you'll be in business.

3/5

Nice. :-) Very moody - very sad. Beautiful and moving chords. Just nice. :-)

5/5

Funky!

. And also sad.

A bit of a schizophrenic mix here. in the verses, it's very funky with that clavi (?) and a nice wah guitar. :-) But then it changes drastically into a moody string based song. The contrast is interesting, and both parts are nice. :-) So I'm giving this a 4/5.

KroD

Yeah! Very groovy. Very bassy. I like that. Well produced, though it sounds a bit quiet at times. Close to the original, but that's OK becuase it's cool! :-) Very interesting to listen to this one. The two best parts here in my opinion are right after the ShockRevEcho sections. Those were quite nice indeed.

Good work! 4/5 :-)

I wanted to like this one. I really did. Ther drums and instruments are really nice. They sound really good, and before the vocals come in, this is a very nice mix.

But the vocals are in the wrong key and there's just no way around it. You should have harmonized this mix a little more. Now, I wince when the vocals come in and produce dischord. Otherwise, fine mix.

2/5.

Terrifically funny and fresh! Never heard anything like this before, and I probably won't again. I really laughed myself silly hearing this. It's really great! 5/5 :-)

X-{ Argh. This mix isn't experimental, it's BORING. It's basically eight minutes (!) of this boring dub music with samples of Shock The Monkey used as ambient sounds. It's barely even a remix. Think about correlating the instruments with the vocals, maybe doing something more interesting with the instruments such as brining in some new ones. I did go a bit crazy in the middle of this - four minutes behind me, another four of the same to go was pretty frightening.

Maybe I missed something here. 1/5

Mmmm, house. :-) Very nice dance song you've got going here - makes me wish I could make mine as interesting. I'm really liking the grooviness in this one, although I have to agree with Loveshadow that the vocals in the first verse are a bit off. That isn't a big problem, though.

Really got me tapping my foot! 4/5. :-)

A good mix, but not quite varied enough or hard enough. Some sustained guitar chords in the chorus would go a long way. I like the angry groove you have going on, but there are other flaws. The drums are pretty weak, and around 2:40 there's a missed opportunity to freak out. The ending is also slightly anti-climactic.

3/5

Well, it's certainly odd.

Personally I'm not as dead against pitch-shifts as wetlabs or FImusic, but I don't like the way it's done here. The intsruments are good, though the mix really needs more variation. The vocals are a bit irritating and helium powered, though they could have been worse. You rearranged them well, at least.

Also it's a bit cheesy sounding. The synth (?) and guitar are just too 80s for me (I seem to have a problem with that in a lot of remixes X-{)and the drums seem too muted. Though I do like the use of slightly less standard percussion.:-)

Overall, my advice would be to pick a different key for your remix and do less pitch shifting. If you DO decide to pitch shift, go down instead of up. (It sounds better, as PG's voice is already in a fairly high register.) I will commend you on trying something a bit new, even if it didn't *quite* work.

3/5

A frustrating mix, but good music is not always easy to understand.

I like the way you appropriated Mr. Gabriel's vocals and turned them into a crazy chorus of. something.:-] I like the instruments, but the drums are not quite played as well as I like (though I have high standards). For world music (?) it's perhaps a bit ordinary. Where are your bongos and pigmy children, man?!?

I may have more to say if I ever get my head around this mix entirely. Until then, 4/5.:-)

A classic mix.

At first it seems a bit too 80s, with a guitar that, while good, does not really convey a sense of urgency as the rest of the mix does. I like the use of layered vocals and menacing strings (as well as other, muddied sounds) at the start. The drums range from hit maybe a bit too softly to really, really SMASHED. I love drums played that hard, it's the sign of an excellent drummer.:-)

I don't like the initial guitar riff, as it seems a bit, well, cheesy. The strings and guitar that appear in the first verse are well done. At about 2:22 the mix gets a huge sense of urgency injected by some awesome drum and guitar playing. I love the double drum hits in the "huh" section. The piano is also well played.

Overall the quality of this mix is outstanding, and even with some flaws it's a 5/5. Great job.:-)

A good mix. :-) The drums are a bit weedy, and sometimes the vocals are a bit off-tempo, but the guitar is nice and powerful. The mastering was fine, and the strings added a nice dramatic feel to the mix.

The outro is a bit weak and very sudden. To me, it feels like a bridge that you should come out of into a chorus.

But, overall I did enjoy this one. So, 3/5. :-)

Nice, but a bit too close to the original. I like the effects near the end.:-) To your credit, you've come up with some very original sounding instruments from the samples. Me, I would have thrown in some synths, but it's a matter of preference and I tend to overproduce anyway.

So, 4/5.

Surprisingly moving. Love those nice strings. :-)

Quite nice. :-) The guitars give a nice big airy feel to the mix, and I like what you've done with the vocals - especially those modulated ones.

The mix is a bit boring for a while when there's very little except PG and the drums. It gets better, though. Good work on those Wave Strings as well.

4/5
